Jost Van Dyke, BVI: A Crewed Yacht Charter Guide (2026)
Jost Van Dyke by crewed yacht: which of its 3 harbors to sleep in, when to hit White Bay and the Soggy Dollar, and the 15-minute walk to the Bubbly Pool.

Jost Van Dyke is the smallest of the four main British Virgin Islands: about 3 square miles, roughly 5 miles northwest of Tortola (Wikipedia, 2026). For crewed charter guests it’s the beach-bar island: White Bay and the Soggy Dollar, Foxy’s in Great Harbour, lobster in Little Harbour, and a ring of small cays off the east end.
The island has three harbors, and the one your yacht sleeps in decides what kind of evening you get. Below you’ll find all three, plus the Bubbly Pool, Sandy Cay and Sandy Spit, and where Jost fits in a week. If you’re still choosing between islands, our complete BVI crewed charter guide covers the whole territory, and the British Virgin Islands destination page shows the yachts that cruise it.
Where is Jost Van Dyke?
Jost Van Dyke lies off the northwest end of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, with its smaller neighbor, Little Jost Van Dyke, off its eastern end (Wikipedia, 2026). The island has no airport, so every visitor comes by sea: on the ferry from Tortola’s West End, on a day boat, or aboard a yacht.
From the charter bases on Tortola it’s a short sail, and from St. Thomas or St. John it’s a short hop, though that one crosses a border. Great Harbour is a port of entry (Caribbean Compass, 2025), so a yacht coming over from the US Virgin Islands can clear in on arrival. Bring your passport; the crew handles the formalities.
If your week starts in the US Virgin Islands, our guide to starting your charter from St. Thomas explains how a BVI crossing fits in.
How did Jost Van Dyke get its name?
Jost Van Dyke is named for a Dutch privateer (BVI Tourism, 2026), traditionally Joost van Dyk, who was active in the Virgin Islands in the early 17th century (Wikipedia, 2026). The island’s own Wikipedia entry adds that “factual evidence for this is not available,” but the name has stuck.
In the 18th century the island had a Quaker community (Wikipedia, 2026), and two of its children made names for themselves far from the Caribbean. William Thornton, born on Jost Van Dyke on May 20, 1759, became the first Architect of the United States Capitol (Architect of the Capitol, 2026). John Coakley Lettsom, born on Little Jost Van Dyke in 1744, founded the Medical Society of London in 1773 (Wikipedia, 2026).
You can still find the ruins of early sugar mills and old footpaths on the island (BVI Tourism, 2026), though most guests come for the beaches.
Where should a yacht anchor at Jost Van Dyke?
On Jost Van Dyke, most crewed yachts spend the night in Great Harbour or Little Harbour. White Bay is “often best as a daytime anchorage,” since wind and swell can make a night there uncomfortable (Caribbean Compass, 2025), and your captain decides each day from the forecast.
Nothing on Jost Van Dyke is far from anything else. Wherever the yacht sleeps, the other harbors and the cays are a short motor or tender ride away.
| Where | What it’s like | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Great Harbour | The main harbor and port of entry, with Foxy’s on the beach | Clearing in from the USVI, a lively night ashore |
| White Bay | A line of beach bars, no dock, so you swim or wade ashore | A long lunch; a night only when it’s calm |
| Little Harbour | A small, quiet bay with three family-run restaurants | A lobster dinner and a peaceful night |
| Diamond Cay | Foxy’s Taboo and the start of the Bubbly Pool trail | A half-day stop at the east end |
| Sandy Cay, Sandy Spit, Green Cay | Uninhabited cays ringed by reef | Swims, picnics and snorkeling by tender, daytime only |

What is White Bay on Jost Van Dyke like?
White Bay is Jost Van Dyke’s beach-bar beach, and it has no dock, so you swim or wade ashore from the boat (Caribbean Compass, 2025). Along the sand you’ll find the Soggy Dollar, Hendo’s Hideout, Ivan’s, One Love, Gertrude’s and Coco Loco, and a patch of reef to snorkel at the west end near Ivan’s.
Gertrude Callwood, who died in 2024, “started the first bar at White Bay on a table,” Deputy Premier Lorna Smith said in tribute (Virgin Islands News Online, 2024). Most of the bay’s visitors come for the day, so the best White Bay hours for a yacht are early and late.
On a crewed charter, getting you ashore is the crew’s job. They’ll run you in by tender close to the beach or suggest you swim the last stretch, which is how most people arrive anyway.
The Soggy Dollar Bar
The Soggy Dollar Bar is where the Painkiller was first mixed, in the 1970s (Soggy Dollar Bar, 2026). Our Soggy Dollar Bar guide explains the name (it comes from the swim ashore) and covers the Painkiller’s history and how to time a visit by yacht.
What is there to do in Great Harbour?
Great Harbour is Jost Van Dyke’s main harbor and the place to go ashore at night. Foxy’s, Philiciano “Foxy” Callwood’s bar, has been at its present site on the beach since 1968 (Virgin Islands News Online, 2018). A short strip of bars and kitchens surrounds it, and every Old Year’s Night it hosts the island’s biggest party. Caribbean Compass calls Foxy’s “arguably the most famous bar in the BVI” (2025).
Foxy was awarded the MBE in 2009, Virgin Islands News Online reported. When Hurricane Irma did catastrophic damage to the island in September 2017 (Wikipedia, 2026), Foxy’s reopened that October under a roof built from salvaged materials (Caribbean Journal, 2017).
Caribbean Compass’s 2025 guide names Corsairs, Ali Baba’s, Cool Breeze and Tipsy Shark along the beach, and your crew will know which are open the week you’re there.

Old Year’s Night at Foxy’s
Old Year’s Night, December 31, is Foxy’s biggest party of the year, and thousands of people come ashore for it (Virgin Islands News Online, 2022). BVI Tourism’s event listing tells boats to anchor early in Great Harbour (BVI Tourism, 2025).
For a charter, that means booking the holiday week early and planning to be in the harbor well before the night itself. Our guide to Christmas and New Year’s charters covers how far ahead the holiday weeks fill.
Why stay a night in Little Harbour?
Little Harbour is a small bay on Jost Van Dyke’s south coast, east of Great Harbour, and a night there is “all about fresh lobster, local hospitality, and peace,” in Caribbean Compass’s words (Caribbean Compass, 2025). Three family-owned restaurant-bars line the shore: Sidney’s Peace & Love, Harris’ Place and Abe’s By the Sea.
An evening here is a handful of yachts and a lobster dinner ashore, without the big party or the line of day boats. Pick it if your group would rather hear the water than the band.
Where is the Bubbly Pool on Jost Van Dyke?
The Bubbly Pool is a natural “hot tub”-style swimming hole on Jost Van Dyke’s northeast shore (BVI Tourism, 2026), reached by a signed, 15-minute coastal trail from Foxy’s Taboo at Diamond Cay (Caribbean Compass, 2025). Waves breaking over the rocks pour into the pool and fill it with foam.
Caribbean Compass says that “during high swells, the Bubbly Pool can really erupt,” and that mid to high tide is the time to go. The same surge that makes it fun makes it rough on a big day, and the rocks are slippery, so wear reef shoes and take your captain’s advice on whether today is the day.

Diamond Cay itself is a national park: a 1.25-acre islet, protected since 1991, where terns, brown boobies and brown pelicans nest (BVI National Parks Trust, 2026). Across the channel, Little Jost Van Dyke is largely uninhabited (Caribbean Compass, 2025), though BVI Traveller lists one beach bar there, the B-Line Beach Bar.
How do you visit Sandy Cay and Sandy Spit?
Sandy Cay and Sandy Spit are uninhabited islets off Jost Van Dyke’s east end, and you visit both by tender from the yacht, in daylight. Sandy Cay has been a national park since 2008 (BVI National Parks Trust, 2026), while Sandy Spit is less than half an acre of sand (Wikipedia, 2026).
Sandy Cay. The 14-acre island was privately owned for 40 years by Laurance S. Rockefeller, whose team planted more than 200 palm trees and cut the trail network you can walk today (BVI National Parks Trust, 2026). It’s a day stop, so you spend the night back in one of Jost Van Dyke’s harbors, and on a larger yacht the crew waits offshore and runs you in by tender. In winter, when northeast swells are common, the beach landing can be tricky. Leave the shells and sand where they are: taking them is against park rules.
Sandy Spit. Caribbean Compass describes it as “a teeny oval of sand with a few scraggly bushes” (2025). It has been photographed for a number of advertising campaigns, and Hurricane Irma nearly wiped it out in 2017 (Wikipedia, 2026). The reefs off Sandy Spit and neighboring Green Cay are good for snorkeling (Caribbean Compass, 2025).

Green Cay. The cay next to Sandy Spit is uninhabited, and BirdLife International lists its waters as an Important Bird Area for a large nesting colony of roseate terns (Wikipedia, 2026).
What are the best things to do in Jost Van Dyke?
The best things to do in Jost Van Dyke are swimming ashore to White Bay’s beach bars, walking to the Bubbly Pool, picnicking on Sandy Spit, snorkeling the reefs off Green Cay and hiking the trails on Sandy Cay (Caribbean Compass, 2025). By yacht, all five fit into one long day if you plan around the swell, the tide and the day visitors.
A typical day runs like this:
- Sandy Spit or Sandy Cay first thing, while the water is calm and the sand is empty.
- Snorkel Green Cay’s reef mid-morning, a short tender ride away.
- Walk to the Bubbly Pool from Foxy’s Taboo around mid to high tide, then lunch at Diamond Cay.
- White Bay in the late afternoon, once the day visitors start leaving.
- Dinner ashore: Great Harbour for music and a crowd, Little Harbour for lobster and quiet.
The yacht’s water toys fill the gaps. A paddleboard is the easiest way to explore the shallows off Sandy Spit, and the crew will tell you where the snorkeling is clearest that day.
When is the best time to visit Jost Van Dyke?
The best time to visit Jost Van Dyke depends on what you want from the island. Winter’s northeast swells make the Bubbly Pool livelier, and February and March bring the Jost Lime & Dine restaurant nights. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 (National Hurricane Center, 2026).
Jost Lime & Dine opens the BVI Food Fête with dinners across the island, and fifteen restaurants took part in 2025 (Virgin Islands News Online, 2025).
Whatever the month, the quietest hours on Jost Van Dyke’s beaches are the evening and the early morning, because most of the island’s visitors come for the day and leave before sunset (Caribbean Journal, 2025). Cruise passengers alone made up nearly 73% of the BVI’s 1.2 million visitors in 2025 (BVI Beacon via Tourism Analytics, 2026). A yacht that sleeps here has those hours to itself.
Our month-by-month guide to the best time to charter in the Caribbean covers weather and pricing across the year.
How does Jost Van Dyke fit into a BVI charter week?
Jost Van Dyke usually sits at the western end of a BVI week, a short sail from Tortola. That often makes it a lively last night before the run back to base. On our 7-day BVI itinerary it’s night six, at the end of a loop that starts with the Caves at Norman Island and runs east through Virgin Gorda and Anegada.
The median listed high-season rate for a week on an all-inclusive crewed sailing catamaran in the BVI is $32,000 (Vital Charters rate analysis, October 2026). All-inclusive covers the food, a standard ship’s bar, fuel, watersports and dockage, and the crew gratuity is on top. Our guide to what a crewed BVI week costs breaks the rate down.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Jost Van Dyke in the BVI or the USVI?
Jost Van Dyke is in the British Virgin Islands, a British Overseas Territory (GOV.UK, 2026). The US Virgin Islands next door are a separate jurisdiction, so crossing between them means clearing customs and immigration.
Do you need a passport to go from St. Thomas to Jost Van Dyke?
Yes. BVI Tourism’s entry requirements say visitors must present a passport to enter and leave the BVI, and that includes arriving by yacht from St. Thomas. The crew handles the clearance, and our guide to charter entry requirements lists the other documents.
Can you stay overnight on Jost Van Dyke?
Yes, though lodging is small-scale: villas, guesthouses and a couple of small hotels, including the Sandcastle on White Bay, which began welcoming guests again in May 2023 after Hurricane Irma closed it (Caribbean Journal, 2023). Jost Van Dyke has no large resorts, and on a crewed charter you sleep aboard the yacht anyway.
How long is the ferry from Tortola to Jost Van Dyke?
About 25 minutes from West End on Tortola to Great Harbour, by Caribbean Compass’s count (2025). Our guide to getting around between islands compares the Jost Van Dyke ferry with private water taxis.
How many people live on Jost Van Dyke?
The 2010 census counted 298 residents on Jost Van Dyke (Wikipedia, 2026).
What is the highest point on Jost Van Dyke?
Majohnny Hill is the highest point on Jost Van Dyke, at 1,053 feet (Wikipedia, 2026).
When is Foxy’s Wooden Boat Regatta?
Foxy’s Wooden Boat Regatta runs over Memorial Day weekend in Great Harbour. It celebrated its 50th anniversary in May 2025, hosted by the West End Yacht Club (Virgin Islands News Online, 2025).
Can you take a jet ski to Sandy Cay?
No. National Parks Trust rules ban personal watercraft at Sandy Cay, along with beaching boats and loud music, so leave the jet ski aboard and go ashore by tender.
White Bay mornings, Little Harbour nights.
