Where do charter yachts go during hurricane season?
Charter yachts spend hurricane season in three places: south of the hurricane belt, hauled out in a boatyard, or repositioned to a summer season elsewhere. Many insurance policies require boats to sit below roughly 12 degrees north latitude between June 1 and November 30, which is why Grenada and Trinidad fill with Caribbean charter yachts every summer. Others haul out ashore in hurricane-rated yards. Larger crewed yachts often cross the Atlantic to run the Mediterranean summer, returning to the Virgin Islands and St Barts each November. A portion of the Virgin Islands fleet stays put under named-storm insurance plans and keeps chartering, since the odds of a direct hit in any given week stay low. The hurricane season numbers explain those odds.
