Is it ever better to book a crewed yacht directly with the owner instead of through a broker?

It is rarely better to book a crewed yacht directly with the owner instead of through a broker, and it is never cheaper. Every yacht in the Caribbean crewed fleet publishes one weekly rate, and the owner pays the broker’s 15 percent commission out of it, so the direct price and the brokered price are the same number. What changes is what sits behind the booking. Direct, the deposit lands in the owner’s operating account under whatever paperwork the owner uses. Through a broker, it sits in a stakeholder account under a CYBA or MYBA contract until the yacht is delivered, and a cancelled boat has to be replaced or refunded. Direct makes sense in one case: a repeat guest re-booking a crew they already know, on an owner-operated boat that is not listed with any clearinghouse. Even then, many owners prefer the contract and the deposit to run through a broker. First timers planning a milestone week gain nothing by going direct. Compare the fleet through a broker, and the yacht pays the fee.
