How it runs, start to finish
1When you choose the yacht
Ask us what is already on board, and how many. Anything the yacht carries is one less thing to rent.
2Once your dates are firm
Reserve the gear. Stock is limited, and cancellation terms tighten in high season: Up 'n' Under asks for a month's notice between 15 December and 15 January.
3Tell your captain
Share what is coming and when, so the crew can plan stowage, charging and a calm anchorage for the first session.
4Embarkation day
Tortola deliveries are put aboard and secured by the operator's staff. Check that the charger and the safety gear are in the bag before you leave the dock.
5During the week
For lessons, plan a day in the North Sound. A rendezvous lesson or a yacht pickup means nobody has to go ashore first.
6Last morning
Rinse the gear with fresh water, pack it in its case and leave it on board. The Tortola operators collect it after you step off.
Six things worth knowing
Crewed yachts only
Island Surf & Sail rents its eFoil to crewed yachts only. A crewed charter qualifies.
Experience for rentals
Up 'n' Under, Deep Bay Watersports and VI Foils rent eFoils to experienced riders. If nobody in your group has ridden one, start with a lesson, then rent.
Charging on board
Rentals come with a charger. Ask your captain where it can be plugged in and when. Island Surf & Sail asks guests not to leave its scooter batteries charging overnight.
Crossing the border
Most operators that deliver to a yacht are in the BVI. Up 'n' Under advises against riding its eFoils in USVI waters, where they are not registered, though its sea scooters may go. BVISUPCO's gear can travel with the yacht as long as the rental starts and ends in the BVI. With any other operator, raise it when you reserve.
Sea scooters at St. John
Much of St. John's coastline lies inside Virgin Islands National Park. The park's 2025 Superintendent's Compendium prohibits underwater dive scooters and propulsion devices in park waters unless the Superintendent permits them. Ask your captain before using one there.
Paying
Up 'n' Under takes cash and all major cards, American Express included, and wants payment in full to book. BVISUPCO takes Visa and Mastercard, not American Express, and asks for no deposit. Land & Sea Power Services takes a 50% deposit.
When and where you learn
An eFoil lesson runs from one hour to two and a half hours. In the BVI the teaching happens in the protected North Sound of Virgin Gorda. In the USVI it happens on St. Thomas, with one school on St. Croix.
The first session
What a first lesson looks like
It starts on land with a safety briefing, then moves to the water: lying on the board first, then standing as your confidence builds. Up 'n' Under coaches through a radio helmet while you ride, and helmets and life vests are provided.

Water toy rental FAQs
Can I rent an eFoil for a yacht charter in the BVI?
Yes. Island Surf & Sail on Tortola rents a Waydoo eFoil to crewed yachts for $1,600 a week, with delivery and pickup included. Up 'n' Under in the North Sound rents by the week for $1,800 with a charger, delivered free in the North Sound or to a yacht in the Road Town area for $400. Deep Bay Watersports rents by the day for $500 and quotes longer periods on request. Many crewed yachts already carry an eFoil, so ask us what is on board first.
How much does an eFoil lesson cost in the Virgin Islands?
Between $250 and $400 for a private lesson. In the BVI, Deep Bay Watersports charges $350 for a two-hour private lesson. Up 'n' Under charges $250 for one hour, or $350 per board for an hour and a half to two hours, plus $50 if a second student shares the board. On St. Thomas, VI Foils charges $350 for a 90-minute first lesson and Virgin Wakes charges $400 for two hours. On St. Croix, Leading Edge Kite School charges $250 for an hour and a half.
Where can I rent a Seabob in the BVI or USVI?
In the BVI, Deep Bay Watersports at Oil Nut Bay rents Seabobs for $200 per person for one hour or $450 per person for 24 hours, and runs guided Seabob safaris for $295 per person. In the USVI, Eventures VI at Sapphire Beach on St. Thomas rents Seabobs from 30 minutes up to a week, with a lesson included.
Can the equipment be delivered to our yacht?
In the BVI, yes. Island Surf & Sail and BVISUPCO include delivery to the yacht and collection at the end of the charter, and Land & Sea Power Services delivers and collects anywhere on Tortola at no charge. Up 'n' Under delivers weekly rentals free in the North Sound, or by boat to a yacht in the Road Town area for $400, and Deep Bay Watersports will bring an eFoil lesson to your boat. On St. Thomas, Eventures VI delivers to any beach or marina with 24 hours' notice.
Do I need experience to rent an eFoil?
For a rental without an instructor, yes. Up 'n' Under, Deep Bay Watersports and VI Foils rent eFoils only to riders with experience. If you have not ridden one before, book a lesson first. A first lesson runs one to two hours.
Where do eFoil lessons take place?
In the BVI, in the North Sound of Virgin Gorda: at Saba Rock with Up 'n' Under, around Deep Bay and Oil Nut Bay with Deep Bay Watersports, or from the back of your own yacht. In the USVI, on St. Thomas at a beach chosen for the day's wind, at Sapphire Beach, and on St. Croix.
Can I use a sea scooter at St. John?
Ask your captain first. Much of St. John's coastline is inside Virgin Islands National Park, and the park's 2025 Superintendent's Compendium prohibits underwater dive scooters and propulsion devices in park waters unless the Superintendent permits them.
What is the difference between an eFoil, a Seabob and a sea scooter?
An eFoil is an electric board on a hydrofoil that lifts you above the water. A Seabob is a hand-held electric craft that pulls you along the surface or beneath it. A sea scooter is a small, light propeller unit that tows a snorkeler. An eFoil takes a lesson to learn. A Seabob or sea scooter needs only a short briefing.
